Kyiv is implementing large-scale projects designed to increase the level of environmental and energy security. The Mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko declared it during the first meeting on the development of a Green City Action Plan for the Ukrainian capital with the participation of the city authorities, the EBRD, bank consultants (Atkins) and structural units of the Kyiv City State Administration.
According to the Mayor, environmental safety is a priority for the city. Issues related to the environment have been accumulating for decades. But Kyiv is moving in the direction of resolving them.
"This is evidenced by the Memorandum of Understanding signed in March between the Kyiv City State Administration and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development - "Green Cities". Investments in the environment are investments in the healthy and secure future of citizens of the next generations. That is why we consider the development of all spheres of life through the prism of environmental friendliness and energy efficiency", - said Vitali Klitschko.
According to him, there are several key factors influencing the ecological background of the city. First of all, it is a rapid increase in the number of road transport, the work of industrial enterprises, the need to re-equip and modernize infrastructure, etc.
"In this regard, Kyiv is not unique, many European capitals have similar problems. Nowadays Kyiv is implementing large-scale projects designed to increase the level of environmental and energy security, - said Vitali Klitschko. - First of all, I am talking about the largest project in Ukraine in the field of housing and utility services - modernization of the Bortnychi Sewage Treatment Plant. The work is carried out under an international loan agreement with Japan".
He also reminded that two years ago the city returned the thermal power complex from the private company "Kyivenerho" to the community management and started its modernization.
In particular, this year specialists will start installing a chemical treatment system at the waste incineration plant "Energia". After that, the plant's work on harmful emissions will meet European environmental standards.
"A separate waste collection program was launched in Kyiv a year ago. We note that the amount of waste collection that will not go to the landfill or incineration is constantly growing. Kyivans are conscious and they sort garbage, - the Mayor noted. - Also this year in the capital there will be the first air monitoring posts through which we will have qualitative information on air quality and identify measures to improve it. These are just some of the measures and projects that Kyiv is implementing to improve the environment. I am convinced that thanks to the support of international partners, their experience and knowledge, we will master this work".
