In 2019, Kyiv has ranked 92nd among the most technological cities in the world. The results are revealed by joint research by the World Competitiveness Center’s Smart City Observatory and Singapore University of Technology and Design. The top 100, the Ukrainian capital has reached less than five years since it began to develop smart city technologies, said Yuriy Nazarov, the Director of the Department of Information and Communication Technologies of the KCSA.
“In four years, Kyiv has created the necessary IT infrastructure from scratch and has become the first in Ukraine to launch a series of electronic services for urban residents. We have covered more than 1,200 kilometers of fiber optic network, computerized social facilities, and have installed over 7,000 CCTV cameras. With the help of modern technologies, we improve security, transport, and services in the city. The innovations help to make the activity of the authorities more efficient and transparent and give an instrument of influence to the residents on the development of Kyiv”, - Yuriy Nazarov commented.
There are more than 40 smart city-projects in Kyiv in the areas of transparency of power, e-democracy, security, housing, and utility sector and transport. For the first time in Ukraine, the capital has launched in 2019 the Kyiv Smart City app - an embodiment of the "city in a smartphone" concept. The mobile application has been developed by the IT specialists of the Department of Information and Communication Technologies in order to integrate all urban services on one platform and make their use accessible by smartphone.
An electronic document flow has been introduced in the activity of the authorities, which has ensured a quick interaction between the departments and enterprises of the KCSA and has saved tons of paper for printing documents. In the field of e-democracy, Kyiv was the first in Ukraine to launch the Public Budget, where more than 1,300 city development projects have won.
Thanks to innovative technologies in the field of security, Kyiv has entered the 50 cities with the most covered CCTV cameras. Video surveillance has helped law enforcement to reduce crime in places where cameras have been installed. There was an average of 17 robberies a day in 2016 and 5 robberies a day in 2019.
The housing and utilities sector in the city also uses smart city tools: the residents of Kyiv pay for utilities online and can monitor the operation of municipal vehicles in real-time. The biggest impact of e-technologies is felt by the public transport system. More than 1300 buses, trolleybuses, and trams are equipped with GPS trackers to monitor their movement. Every day, more than 300,000 people in Kyiv buy e-tickets to use any type of public transport without queues and cash.
“In 2020, the capital will continue to develop a smart city direction. Kyiv leverages Big data, artificial intelligence, and Blockchain technology to create a comfortable urban environment. Also among our priorities is improving the city on a smartphone. The Kyiv Smart City app will be expanded with new sections and services: e-democracy, medicine, 1551, kindergarten, pets, and more”, - Yuriy Nazarov said.
